I discovered my new solar powered roof vent has a plastic screen and rats and squirrels chew through it to get into the attic. Home Depot sells a steel screen for $25 to screw to the plywood inside. Make sure the screws are <1/2" so they don't poke through the underlayment. If you haven't replaced your roof yet, have the roofer do it.
